[RPG Corner is a monthly post where I talk about something related to Role-Playing Games.]
I created a creature based off of a creature in the series Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card called a facemask. Here is a link to the Wikipedia page for the book series: link. I also released the Face-Mask as a homebrew creature on DnD Beyond, the creature’s name in at the start of the stat block is a link.
Face-Masks look and feel like a mass of wet, rotting refuse, but do not be fooled! If they touch a creature they turn that creature into either a living zombie or a freak of nature. Continue reading
Stigr was pouring over the histories in the royal library. As the chief historian, he was expecting to be reading out historical decrees to the king and his court. While, on occasion, he was required to give context to a law for a ruling he was rarely needed in the throne room. He was required to be there whenever the king held court, but he was mostly left to his own devices during the day. He was currently doing some research for the king, but that wouldn’t take too horribly long. He had another matter to attend to afterward. Continue reading
Dark Under was created when the skravyn were sealed in the tunnels of Nevre. Dark magics seeped out from the sealed portal and creatures in the tunnel were twisted by it. The survivors of Dark Under speak of a darkness darker than black and an oppressive dread. They also say that if you turn around then you may yet survive.
Though most creatures from Dark Under stay below the ground some of them have been seen above the surface. The noxious flyers periodically fly out in small numbers, and every hundred years or so a flight of hundreds razes the surrounding landscape. Gaseous tendrils, gas sacs with tentacles that range from small floating balls to giant lumbering bags of flesh that can no longer float have been known to terrorize small towns. Skittering creepers have replaced many large insects on the surface of Nevre.
In the deeps of the Forest of the Elves, where not even the elves go, the skittering creepers have taken a niche as the apex predator. Every few decades the elves have to push them back or risk the forest being overtaken. The skittering creepers that still live in Dark Under are much more fearsome than their surface brethren. Few have escaped alive from encountering these roaming packs.

Simisola looked over the wreckage of the guardpost. One of the soldiers must have set off the avalanche explosive before they were completely overrun, sealing the pass and killing the enemies who had not yet entered the post. Unfortunately the avalanche had also hit the guard house causing it to collapse in on itself. Some of the soldiers had survived and began to dig out the guardpost. One of them had brought word to the major outpost where Simisola had been visiting. She had insisted on going herself to help with the soldiers’ recovery. Continue reading
The two replacement fighters exited the hanger on the Impaler. As they did so Seveth and Greel saw Teslief’s personal fighter heading for the fighter bay. They could tell she was flying line of sight by the jerky reorientation to the hanger. Just behind Teslief was Evran’s fighter with multiple scorch marks and running one engine.
Seveth fired up her comms. “Are we clear to go reengage, Darth Teslief?”
“You’re clear, but leave some for us.” Continue reading
Prince Rajendra knelt on the edge of his father’s bed. Tears spilled from his eyes as he watched the life drain from his father’s face. “Father, don’t leave me. I don’t know what to do without you.”
“End the wars, Rajendra. That’s what you do.” The king smiled slightly. “If anyone can do it you-” the king stopped speaking. The half-smile frozen on his face.
The healer looked at Rajendra. “The king is dead, long live the king.” Continue reading
Carefully climbing the slope of a downed spire Aram took point and Throbor took the rear. If anything appeared in front the warrior would catch it, and if anyone were to slip the jotuun would catch them.
Aram made it to the surface and looked around. All seemed clear and he gave a caution sign. Then he also gave the clear sign. Cautiously he pulled himself onto a stable part of the cobbled road and helped Erin up. He nodded to her and turned to survey the area more thoroughly as she helped Tribst up. Continue reading
